Official Launch of the Feasibility Study for the Agrivoltaic Pilot Project in West and Central Africa

In Lomé-Togo, four West and Central African countries—Togo, Senegal, Guinea, and the Democratic Republic of Congo—came together to develop an innovative initiative: developing agrivoltaics, a technology that combines agricultural production and solar energy production on the same land.

Supported by the European Union (EU), this initiative aims to promote sustainable agriculture while facilitating access to solar energy in rural areas. It relies on the integration of solar panels into farms, thus enabling dual land use: both agricultural and energy production.

This study will establish the technical, economic, and commercial viability of the technology in these countries.

The pre-feasibility study aims to carry out an in-depth diagnosis on the sustainability of agrivoltaic technology, by analyzing:

  • Local environmental conditions (solar radiation, rainfall, crop types, etc.);
  • Existing agricultural systems and those that could benefit from this technology;
  • The expected economic impact on local communities;

The initial goals of the kick-off workshop were to officially launch the feasibility study, present the initial analytical results, and structure the project’s governance bodies.

The sessions laid the foundations for a dynamic collaboration between the four beneficiary countries, the technical partners (CTCN, EU), and the consortium of consultants.

This workshop validated the project methodology and, more importantly, embodied the shared commitment of all stakeholders to to carry out work to develop innovative technology that can contribute to achieving the SDG goals (1. No poverty; 2. Zero hunger; 5. Gender equality; 7. Affordable and clean energy; 13. climate action) of these countries.
